I absolutely resent the fact that Supergirl is being compared to that SNL trailer for Black Widow.
There was a REASON that was parody. Because it does NOT suit the character of Black Widow to have a story like that. Not with her characterization, her backstory, anything. Because people in Hollywood think that’s the only way to market movies to ladies. So much so that they could and would try to market Natasha’s story like that, completely nonsensically and out of character.
Kara OTOH is NOT Black Widow. She’s a twenty something girl/woman, and she’s just stepping out into the real world, struggling to balance her personal life her powers. She’s bubbly, happy, and all those things that yes a protagonist character in a ‘chick flick’ would be. But so what? I didn’t know being a female superhero meant there was only ONE type. Why can’t Kara be having boy troubles, sister fights AND be flying off and saving the day? Why is there a sense that if something is feminine or chick flicky it’s automatically not badass enough, and that it’s only meant for chick flick centric womanly consumption?
Why CAN’T she be both?
