At first I didn’t even notice because it felt so organic, but the use of
foreign languages in this show is exemplary. Unfortunately I don’t know
even the tiniest bit of Russian, Mandarin or Japanese, so I cannot tell
how much effort was put in on the realism front. However, I do know a
little bit of Spanish and some people on the internet have commented on
the accurcy of the Mandarin. Even if not all the actors playing Chinese
and Russian characters are native speakers without accents, this show is
possibly the first mainstream pop culture product that sticks to having
characters speak their languages whenever it is appropriate, even for
long scenes, going for subtitles, instead of illogically slipping into English for important
dialogue amongst themselves. Can you think of any other example where
this has been done with as much logic and follow through? I can’t.
