fuck this joke honestly. It’s been a trend these past couple years at these award shows where a white says something like this and all the whites giggle together but aint none of them do shit after that shit settle. they laugh in the comfort of their privilege. like they just say this to be quirky. something as severe as this is brought up and everyone laughs cuz they know it’s true but it means nothing to them. it’s nothing serious. It’s like “haha, i guess that is messed up. whelp im comfortable as fuck tho so ima keep doing me”
What the fuck are they supposed to do while they’re sitting at the Oscars? Do you want NPH to go “okay so this awards list is a little too white so I’m just gonna give the awards to the people I feel deserve them?”
People with social status are FINALLY starting to call this shit out, using their fame to call out privilege and injustice where they see it. This is actually a big deal.
I really wish tumblr would start recognizing small changes. Of course we should strive for better, but systemic change doesn’t happen overnight. NPH is an openly gay man hosting the fucking Oscars. Can we just talk about the fact that two years ago Seth McFarlane hosted, and sang a song about how many actresses had shown their breasts in film—often in depictions of trauma or sexual assault?
Or the fact that there are people out there every day who are working to better recognize POC, LGBT people, and other minorities in the media, who get zero recognition?
Agent Carter—a show with a badass female protag—is probably going to get canceled because no one is watching it.
Parks and Rec—a show about a tiny town in rural Indiana that has one of the most diverse casts I’ve ever seen—gets literally zero recognition on Tumblr other than “haha this show is funny.”
Fresh off the Boat, same thing.
Modern Family—while incredibly white—shows the struggles of immigrants and LGBT families—and again, no recognition.
How about you get off your fucking high horse, recognize that change takes time but that there are some pretty solid changes happening, and just stop.
Tumblr “activism” is horrible.
Why are people actually upset about NPH opening the oscars with a strong statement (passed as a joke, but that’s how these things are done) about racial inequality?? You wanted him to protest? Call up the academy and complain about the nominees being too white?
He wasn’t in a position that affected who was nominated or recognized. He was hosting and as a host he did what he could from that position. It’s people like you who blog and complain about the actions of celebrities not being enough, who are doing very little. Every little bit is something. People are speaking up. And what are you doing other than criticizing them?
Neil didn’t do this to be quirky. You think all the white people sitting there enjoyed that little jab? You think a bold line like that wasn’t at all risky on his part?
What prevents change, more than anything, is silence. And that is what too many people would have wanted. We white people often don’t want to be reminded of our privilege because we feel guilty, so too many of us prefer to pretend the issue doesn’t exist. Neil RECOGNIZED the privilege of him and others.
Stop criticizing the people speaking up and maybe say a few words to the people who refuse to.
maybe before you judge him, think, JUST think if he ever said that black people didn’t deserve nominations. he made a joke which clearly showed what he thinks, that it shouldn’t be like that. i mean, he could totally ignore this situation, but he made this joke at damn beginning to make people see this situation, to point it out.
